Advent Service of Carols and Lights on December 6

Advent Service of Carols and Lights

On Sunday, December 6, at 4:00 PM, Church of Our Redeemer will hold a service of music and lessons from the Bible, telling the story of the birth of Jesus. Harpist Felice Pomeranz, flute, and cello will accompany the 30-voice choir.   Redeemer’s Music Director Dr. Bernadette Colley crafted and conducts the service.

This Candlelight Service of Lessons and Carols is an Anglican tradition dating back to 1880. King’s College, Cambridge, England, has been singing a Lessons and Carols Service since 1918, and the service has been broadcast by radio BBC to the world since sometime in the 1930s. “Wherever the service is heard and however it is adapted, whether the music is provided by choir or congregation, the pattern and strength of the service derive from the lessons and not the music. ‘The main theme is the development of the loving purposes of God…’ seen ‘through the windows and words of the Bible’.”

Felice Pomeranz holds degrees from New England Conservatory in both classical music and jazz and is the first harpist to receive a jazz degree from the Conservatory. A clinician and performer at festivals around the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean, she has directed three summer harp festivals in New England, named Associate Professor of Harp at Berklee College of Music in Boston, and is a member of the faculty of The Boston Conservatory.

The service at Church of Our Redeemer on 6 Meriam Street is free and open to the public, and a reception with refreshments for all will follow.  Please join us and invite your family and friends.
